IMPetus
IMP2014-1

Like Martha Graham's theory of "Blood Memory," there are forces and types of music that speak to us, without concern for sense or cause - time or place. Something triggers an impulse. This something is the impetus. It resonates within us, and we are compelled to act. The impetus may deliver us to new terrain - alien and unnerving. Conversely, we may find a world of uncanny familiarity, whether of our time or another. Therefore, we call ourselves IMPetus, not because we enact such a powerful force. But because we respond to and celebrate it.

Come celebrate with us!

Band Bio

Maria Tegzes is a singing actress with a dark and earthy sensuality whose performances have received critical acclaim the world over. Geoffrey Burleson has been heralded as a “remarkable pianist” and “a first-class instrumental presence”, as well as an “outright thrilling” artist. David “Knife” Fabris, noted for his collaborations with jazz pianist legend, Ran Blake, is highly praised for his sensitive, virtuosic, and iconoclastic interpretations.

Combining jazz, rock, blues, classical, and world music, these three artists adamantly, skillfully, and passionately smash through the barriers between musical styles and categories.  They see all styles as leaping-off points to musical and creative flights of fancy.

"Geoff Burleson and I met Dave while we were all students at New England Conservatory: Geoff and I focusing on the classical tradition, while Dave was focusing on jazz and rock. The three of have always loved, and been interested in playing, different styles of music. After graduating from NEC, Geoff and I (now married) mostly lost touch with Dave. But in moving to New York over a decade later, we reconnected on a couple of projects that were very musically eclectic. We also noticed how aligned our tastes were and how much we enjoyed each other’s company and musical mastery. So we started coming up with arrangements for the three of us. And from that, came original tunes for our then-fledgling ensemble. We’ve been through ups and downs over the decades, had years when we were off doing other projects (musical or otherwise). But inevitably, times would arise when we’d reunite as a musical trio, each time, experiencing ever deeper fulfillment in our work together."
